I looked around/scanned the area/searched my surroundings for any sign of/a clue about/help with my predicament. I noticed/spotted/observed a curious/peculiar/unusual thing/object/situation nearby, but it didn't seem helpful/wasn't relevant/proved useless. Desperation set in/reached its peak/became unbearable, and I started to cry/felt tears welling up/let out a sob. This had/was/seemed like the worst/most miserable/utterly frustrating day of my life.
